Tom Ford has become one of the most well-known names in fashion design. His fragrances are worn by countless celebrities and he has become known for their potency.

Tom Ford wears the cologne Beau De Jour by Tom Ford. His first venture under his own designer label was in the world of fragrances when he launched Black Orchid in 2006. His first clothing line wasn’t released until a year late in 2007.

You can read more below about Tom Ford’s work in fragrance before starting his own fashion label, his jump to create his own products, and the cologne he prefers, Beau de Jour.

Tom Ford at Gucci

In the early 90s, Tom Ford had managed to get into the world of fashion despite not having much of a background in the industry. He was tenacious which led to him successfully getting his foot into the door.

It was in 1990 that Tom Ford was hired by Dawn Mello to move to Italy and work for Gucci. Gucci was near bankruptcy and in need of some serious rebranding. While most people wanted nothing to do with the brand, Ford jumped at the opportunity to work in European fashion.

He was hired on to be the chief women’s ready-to-wear designer. He was so good that within a month he was designing men’s clothing and then shoes. After two years with Gucci, Tom Ford was the head of women’s ready-to-wear, image, advertising, store design, and fragrance. That was how he got into the world of fragrances.

It was when he was working for Gucci that the company acquired Yves Saint Laurent in 1999. He was appointed the role of Creative Director with this fashion house as well. He was already doing controversial advertising that was boosting brand recognition and sales for Gucci and then he started to do the same with YSL.

However, things rapidly changed for Ford when he and the Gucci CEO Domenico de Sole were unable to come to an agreement with Pinault Printemps Redoute on who controlled the company. Ford left his role with Gucci Group in 2004 and four new people were hired to replace him.

There was a silver lining though because this devastating moment in his career led him down the path to where he is today.

You can watch Tom Ford talking about his time at Gucci and how devastating it was to leave the fashion house in the below interview with PEN.

Creating the Tom Ford Label

Since he was no longer with Gucci, Ford had the chance to create his own fashion brand. It would become a fashion brand that is recognized worldwide and incredibly popular among celebrities.

He launched the Tom Ford Label in 2006 with a line of menswear, eyewear, beauty products, and accessories. It was the same year that he launched the Tom Ford label that he released his very first fragrance.

That fragrance was Black Orchid, a perfume for women that ended up being a fan of many men as well. The love of Black Orchid helped to make Tom Ford synonymous with great smelling fragrances.

Ford worked with the international perfumery Givaudan to create the perfume. It didn’t take long before the Tom Ford brand was being worn by celebrities everywhere.

Tom Ford Wears Beau De Jour

As for the cologne that Tom Ford wears, it is his cologne called Beau De Jour. This fragrance was launched in 2019 as a part of the Tom Ford Private Label Collection.

The cologne is described as “Beau De Jour presents the perfectly groomed gentleman. Cool, commanding lavender mingles with a deeper, sublime Fougere intensity beneath the surface.”

It is an aromatic Fougere and it has top notes of lavender and lavender extract, middle notes of rosemary, basil, mint, geranium, and oakmoss. At the base of the fragrance are patchouli and amber.

A 50ml bottle of Eau De Jour by Tom Ford costs $134. However, Tom Ford owns the company so he doesn’t actually have to pay for the fragrance. That’s just one of the perks of owning your own fashion label.
