Richard D. Bach is an American writer and former stunt pilot. He is best known for his 1970s best-selling novel Jonathan Livingston Seagull. He has written numerous other books, including Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah, One, A Gift of Wings, and The Bridge Across Forever. Bach was born in Oak Park, Illinois, and grew up in Long Beach, California. He attended Long Beach City College and the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied English and philosophy. He served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1957, and then became a professional stunt pilot. Bach began writing in the late 1960s, and his first book, Stranger to the Ground, was published in 1963. His second book, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, was published in 1970 and became an international bestseller. It was followed by Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah in 1977, and One in 1988. Bach has been married twice and has three children. He currently lives in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. He is 85 years old.
