Paul Vallone, a lifelong public servant from a Queens political dynasty, passed away suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 56. He was a moderate Democrat who represented Queens’ District 19 in City Council from 2014-2021, chairing the economic development committee. Vallone paid special attention to education issues, adding 4,500 school seats to the district and reinstating the New York City Council’s Merit Scholarship. He led efforts to renovate Flushing’s beloved Bowne Park and built a new environmental center at Alley Pond Park.

Vallone brought in a total of $40 million to Northeast Queens across his eight years in office, more than the district received in the previous nine city budgets together. Borough President Donovan Richards called Vallone the epitome of a public servant, a true champion for the Northeast Queens communities he passionately served and an unrelenting advocate for military veterans. Before his career in city government, Vallone worked at his family’s general practice law firm, Vallone & Vallone LLP, founded by his grandfather Charles in 1932. The family’s political power in Queens spans back decades, with Charles Vallone serving as a judge in the borough, and Paul’s father Peter Vallone as speaker of city council.

The news of Councilman Paul Vallone’s untimely passing is sad beyond words. He was a friend and always had good advice since I took office in 2022. I had the opportunity to work with Paul as a member of the Veterans Committee. His life was dedicated to serving others and he did so with a big smile on his face. He loved his community, but mostly he loved his beautiful family. My sincere condolences to Anna Marie, Lea, Catena, Charlie, and the entire Vallone family. Paul will be deeply missed.

NY-03 Congressional Candidate Tom Suozzi tweeted mourning Vallone’s passing, calling him a great family man, devoted father, husband, and public servant dedicated to the values he learned from his parents and family. Vallone is survived by his wife Anna-Marie, and his three children, Catena, Lea, and Charlie. Visitation will take place on Thursday, Feb. 1, at Joseph Farenga and Sons Inc. in Astoria, followed by a mass on Friday, Feb. 2, at St. Andrew Avelino Catholic Church in Flushing. A cemetery service will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Woodside.
